Survey says: "The future is voip!"
Tuesday, July 11, 2006
What a summer. We've got the FCC on one side, launching stealth attacks on the entire voip industry so they can fund their Great Antique Phoneline Build-Out, because everyone knows that 100 year old technology is where it's at. On the other side, you have Congress, jumping out of bed with big business long enough to sell voip down the river. And in the middle, there's you, me and the rest of the country, shouting, "I want my voip internet phone!"
Even though our legislators seem bound and determined to stifle both the internet and voice over IP telephony, many businesses have already decided where the future lies, and it isn't with traditional phone systems. So who are some of the faces behind the statistics?
Brooklyn Brewery, the 35th largest brewery in the US, made the decision to switch to voip after their legacy PBX caught on fire and toasted their telephone system. M5 Networks had them up and running in two days. Not only are they saving money, but now they don't have to use Verizon's static and drop-prone lines.
FTD, the world's oldest and largest floral delivery service, relies on voip to handle their call center traffic. The company chose voip over a traditional telephone system because of its next generation features and robust scalability.
The Seattle Times moved to voip when their legacy phone system became obsolete and unsupported. Driven by the need for high voice quality and 24/7 uptime, the newspaper found their $50,000 a year dialing charges have dwindled to the cost of a router--about $2000.
