Walkie-talkie for your Palm: WiFiTalkie
Thursday, July 20, 2006
RaNo Software's WiFiTalkie puts the power of two-way radio in the palm of your, well, Palm. Thanks to Solomon for the heads up on this innovative product. Utilizing voip over wireless broadband, the software connects two or more Palm OS 5 handhelds through a common network.
You can send and receive voice in duplex mode (simultaneously), broadcast to more than one device at the same time, use a push-to-talk switch, and experience typical walkie-talkie sound functions, like after transmission beeps and static sounds if there's no transmission.
Aside from playing secret agent man, why would anyone want to turn their Palm into a walkie-talkie? RaNo has some pretty good ideas: use it as a corporate or home intercom; help coordinate work crews and maintain voip internet phone communication between warehouses, stores, and production lines; streamline the order taking process in restaurants and bars; talk between moving vehicles or while engaging in outdoor activities; and lastly, as a baby monitor or a children's toy. Although it's probably not good as a teething device.
You can download the trial version from RaNo's website and order the full version for $14.95 at PalmGear or Handango.
