WiFi Pay Phones from down under
Monday, August 28, 2006
With the advent of the cell phone age, pay phone use has dramatically dropped. Why use a pay phone, when you can carry a mobile phone with you wherever you are? Even in hospitals, where cell phone use is largely restricted, pay phones are dwindling fast.
But those roaming rates can be a killer. And overage fees? Outrageous. Pie Networks has introduced a new kind of pay phone that might just bring pay phones back from the brink of extinction: the WebPhone.
Specifically, it's a pay phone that's really a voip internet phone. Instead of being hardwired to a broadband connection, WebPhones use wifi hotspots for connectivity.
Aside from the handset and number pad, WebPhones come equipped with a color monitor, and full sized keyboard, which they need, since they also offer internet access, along with inexpensive voip phone calls.
There's no word yet on how much WebPhone use will cost, but company sources say they're aiming for a price point that has lower rates than what your cell phone plan currently offers.
