Step 1: get ready for mobile voiping

Thursday, September 28, 2006

In case of emergency, break glass and remove this handy guide on setting up your voip account for mobility. Because sometimes, you can take it with you...your voip internet phone, that is.

It can be hard to think of everything you need to do when faced with a sudden and/or stressful out-of-town trip. My all-time favorite thing about voip is that you can take it with you when you travel--but you need to set up your account to take advantage of all the things voip can do for your family.

First and foremost, Call Forwarding. So important when you're trying to keep everyone updated with the latest developments in your little life adventure. Login to your account and go to the Call Features page, where you'll find Call Forwarding about 3/4 of the way down the page. Be sure to check the box next to Call Forwarding and type in the number you'd like your calls forwarded to.

There are also a few specialized Call Forwarding selections you can make: Call Forwarding Busy redirects incoming calls to another number, only if your phone is busy; Call Forwarding No Answer forwards them if you can't answer; Call Forwarding Selective will forward pre-selected callers to the number of your choice, for instance, other doctors or family members can be tagged for forwarding, while all the other incoming calls might go to voicemail.

Speed dial is another handy feature. You don't really need to do anything special, just know that those numbers are right there, in your account, so you have them when you need them.

Sequential ring calls each one of a list of numbers (created and input by you) until you're either found, or it runs out of places to call. If you're unreachable, calls roll over to your voicemail.

If you need to know when people are trying to reach you, activate the Call Notify feature and an email will be generated either whenever anyone calls your number, or only for a specific group of callers that you define in your settings.

These basic features go a long way toward helping your communication channels stay open and accessible, even if the rest of your life is tangled up in blue.
