If you already are or planning to be an affiliate you will need to manage your website beyond just content and popularity. A site's search engine ranking-capabilities can be highly improved by avoiding common design and structural mistakes.
To make your site search engine optimized, here are some do's and don'ts:
Flash - flash animations can't be "read", therefore they don't add any plus when your site is being indexed. You may combine HTML and Flash if you are so eager to be flashy.
Text-based Menu - try to use text-based menu(s). Text is readable.
Avoid frames - there are more friendly options to use, such as layers (DIV) or the very advanced AJAX coding.
Use the Title tag and Meta tags - these tags are crawled and help to make your site relevant to the searched terms or phrases.
Use various font tags - it is believed that different HTML font tags (such as h1,h2, etc.) weight differently and considered more relevant to the content in them.
Avoid Dynamic URLs - These URLs can be too long and might frequently change, thus, regularly ignored by search engines.
Be careful with images - Try not to slow down the site with too many images. If you must use larger images break them up into parts. Use gif instead of jpg format if possible.
Register your site at directories and search engines. While there are tricks to improve your rankings don't try to mislead search engines. They are smart and can recognize commonly used misleading methods.
There are many more aspects to consider. I will get back to them some other time.
