Can I keep my existing number? If yes, how do I do it?

First, verify the number can be changed by going to: http://www.voip.com/voip_area_code.aspx

On that page, you can type in your number and can see if it is transferable. If it is, here’s how it works:

  1. Voip.com initiates the number transfer
  2. You can do all the work as you sign up. All information provided must match the information with your current provider, and you cannot cancel your old service until the number is ported. If you cancel, you will lose your number.
  3. Voip.com will then request to have the phone number ported over.
  4. The process usually takes 15 to 20 days, but can take up to 30 days some times.
  5. Once the number transfers, we will contact you via email to let you know you can cancel with their current provider.

DSL subscribers have a special situation because you must keep your existing phone number to maintain a high-speed connection to voip.com. In this instance, we suggest either transferring your DSL service to another phone line with your current carrier, or reduce your service to the minimum with your DSL provider once the transfer is complete or you can switch to cable internet instead of DSL.

Can I use more than one extension with voip.com?

Yes. There are several ways to use multiple phones with your voip.com Internet Phone adapter. The most popular method is to use a cordless phone system that uses a base unit and additional, or extra, handsets. The “base station” of the cordless phone plugs directly into your Internet Phone Adapter’s phone jack. You can then place the extra handsets wherever you desire. Popular manufacturers of these cordless phone systems include Uniden, Motorola, and V-Tech (plus many others).

Wireless phone jacks are yet another great method of using multiple phones with your voip service. A Wireless phone jack converts an existing electrical socket into a phone outlet without having to run any phone wires. You can install a wireless phone jack as easily as plugging in a lamp, toaster, or any other device. Simply plug the “base unit” into your voip.com Phone Adapter and then place an extension jack anywhere you would like to have a phone. Many wireless phone jacks (such as those from RCA) have built-in surge protection and allow for as many phone extensions as you need.

How can I get my fax to work?

Although some fax machines may be compatible with our adapter, we cannot guarantee that you'll find the fax performance satisfactory. The newer model all-in-one machines seem to work with some modifications made to them. Our customer service would be able to help you with that.

How does 911 Service work?

Your account includes E911 service. E911, or enhanced 911, is a location technology system that assists emergency workers in determining the caller’s location.

To reach 911 services from your VoIP phone:

  1. Pick up phone
  2. Dial 911

Please remember that 911 lines are reserved for emergency calls to report a crime in progress, or a fire, or to request an ambulance. Using 911 for non-emergency calls may delay the arrival of help for people caught in real emergencies.

Can I use voip.com with my existing home security system?

Because standard security systems aren't natively compatible with voip, we strongly suggest you keep a basic landline service for use by your security system, or contact a company such as Alarm.com to upgrade your existing system.

The home security industry is rapidly evolving to accommodate new technology, like voip, but until voip is fully supported, we cannot endorse the use of a home security system on a voip line.

We do have instructions on how to modify your current system, but this should only be done by a qualified individual. Should you choose to implement a security system on your voip.com phone line, you assume all risk of loss if the system fails to perform at any time.

Can I get a virtual number from voip.com?

You can use a Virtual Number to establish a "Local" phone number wherever your friends, family, or customers live. This virtual number allows people to call you for the price of a local call.
