What is a credit card verification number?

A credit card verification number is a 3 or 4 digit number associated with your card that helps prevent fraudulent use. When you use your card in person, the cashier can ask for your ID, and compare your signature to make sure that you are the cardholder. Phone or online transactions use a credit card verification number, instead. This makes it harder for anyone to steal your card number and use your card.

Each company calls the verification number something a little different:

· American Express: CID (Card Identification Number)
· Visa: CVV2 (Card Verification Value)
· MasterCard: CCV (Credit Card Verification Number)
· Discover: CCV (Card Code Verification Number)

On a Visa, MasterCard, or Discover, you'll find the verification number on the back of the card in the signature box. It will be the last three digits. American Express uses a four-digit code that's located just above your account number on the front of the card, to the right hand side.
