Will my home security system work with voip.com?
Maybe. Alarm systems are not explicitly supported by voip.com, however there are many voip compatible services available. Check with your alarm company to see if they offer cellular or wireless monitoring, which works without a landline.
Cellular or wireless alarm systems will function even if your phone or power lines are interrupted, so you're covered if the power goes out or you lose your broadband connection. If wireless is not an option in your area, you may choose to keep a basic landline telephone service for your alarm system to use.
Since most alarm systems are designed to work with traditional phone lines, voip.com recommends taking a conservative approach to home security systems. Broadband outages, power failures, and network congestion can all prevent alarms from being sent to your security company. Keeping your alarm system on a landline connection reduces the chance that a signal won't make it through.
Voip's presence in the security industry, while new, has become significant. 75% of US alarm companies are planning a move from legacy analog systems to voip. If you can't find a suitable alarm system for voip in your area, it's likely that new options will become available within the next six months.
