Introduction to your Linksys® Phone Router (What is a “Router?”)
Simply put, a router is a network device that connects two networks together. The Router connects your local area network (LAN), or the group of computers in your home or office, to the Internet. The Router processes and regulates the information, or data. that travels between these two networks.
The Router’s protects your local network (LAN) so users on the Internet cannot “see” your computer(s). This is how your LAN remains private. The Router protects your network by inspecting the data coming in through the Internet before delivery to the final destination on your network. The Router inspects services like your VoIP phone or other Internet application, and, if allowed, it will forward the data to the appropriate computer or device on your network.
