Protect Yourself from Vishers

There's a new kind of scam on the internet called vishing. Instead of receiving suspicious emails, targets get a friendly phone call from their bank or credit card company, asking them to please confirm their account numbers and passwords. When the information is keyed in, a computer program captures the numbers and makes them available to the con artist. To protect your accounts from vishing attacks, keep these points in mind:

1. Vishing attempts may not be personalized. You might hear a generic recording asking you to call a number and update your information. It may also be a live call with an operator; however they generally won't have specific information about your account, like your name and address.

2. If you receive a suspicious call, politely hang up and then call your institution back using the number on the back of your card or statement.

3. Always let your institution know if you have been the victim of a successful or attempted vish attack.
