What Are Some of the Disadvantages with Voip?
There aren't many, but it's important to know what they are before you make your decision. Probably the biggest concern is connecting to 911 services if the power goes out or your broadband connection is down. An Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) can power your system for a limited time, but if you have no internet access, your phone will not work. Since so many people have cell phones or secondary landlines that can be used to call 911, this isn't as big of a deal as it appears, at first glance.
Number portability is another issue that is gradually getting better. Just as the wireless industry initially had big problems getting landline numbers ported over to cell phone accounts, voip has run into similar resistance from the phone companies. The good news is that most numbers are successfully ported within 30 days, and that the process has become much smoother in recent years. Not all numbers are capable of being ported, so check first to see if yours is one of them.
