How can I transfer a phone number to my account?

The Telecommunications Act of 1996 established a national plan to bring healthy competition to the Telecommunications industry. As a result of this Act, we can request your current carrier transfer your existing number to your new account.

NOTE: DSL subscribers have a special situation because you must keep your existing phone number to maintain a high-speed connection to voip.com. In this instance, we suggest either transferring your DSL service to another phone line with your current carrier, or reduce your service to the minimum with your DSL provider once the transfer is complete or you can switch to cable internet instead of DSL.

To start the transfer process, please login to your account and follow these steps:

  1. Click the Account link underneath the voip.com logo
  2. Click the Change Number link
  3. In the Keep existing number section, please enter your existing number
  4. Click the Continue button
  5. Please choose one of the following three options:
Permanent Call Forwarding: Allows you to keep the temporary voip.com number that was assigned to you. The charge for this service is $4.95/month.

Temporary Call Forwarding: Allows your temporary voip.com number to remain active for 7 days after the transfer of your existing number is complete so you won't miss any important phone calls. There is no charge for this service.

No Call Forwarding: The number you are transferring will replace the voip.com temporary number immediately. Note: The temporary voip.com number will be deactivated and no longer assigned to you. There is no charge for this service.
  1. Click the Continue button
  2. Enter the 911 address for the phone and press Continue
  3. Read and review the confirmation information
  4. If everything is correct, press the Continue button

NOTE: Please do not disconnect your local telephone service with your carrier. The number you are transferring to your voip.com account must be active with your local service provider. Your existing phone number will stay active with your current local and long distance carrier(s) and continue to work until the transfer is complete.

The transfer process may take up to 30 business days because voip.com must provide sufficient documentation to your existing phone company to authorize the transfer according to the process and timetable determined by your existing phone company. The status of the transfer will be updated and posted in your account as information becomes available.
